The GPO Difference

Credit unions exist to serve people. We’re classified as a not-for-profit financial cooperative. We’re owned by our members and our profits translate into savings for our member-owners.

Credit union deposits are insured by the National Credit Union Administration, under the direction of the United States Treasury Department. We must comply with strict Federal regulations with regard to both savings and loan accounts. We take no unnecessary risks with our depositors’ investments.

Our History

GPO Federal Credit Union was established on July 7, 1931 under the name of the Utica, NY Postal Credit Union. At that time, post office employees were the credit union’s sole field of membership.

Through mergers and expansions, we developed into a credit union that accepts members from more than 150 sponsored employee groups and from the communities we serve in Oneida, Herkimer and Madison counties.

After over 80 years of existence, we have grown from a few hundred dollars in assets to one of the region’s premier credit unions with more than $170 million in assets. Our employees originally were made up of volunteers. Today, our workforce is made up of over 65 employees with expertise in financial services.

GPO has kept pace with technology as well. We offer members services like free on-line banking, electronic bill-payment, e-statements, credit and debit cards, direct deposit, totally free checking accounts, loans for every need and competitively-priced savings accounts.
