As enjoyable as the holidays are, you may be relieved that all the decorating, baking and shopping is over. Before the fruitcake becomes too stale eat, think now about putting money aside for next year. By starting now, you’ll save yourself the stress of trying to come up with the money at the last minute, or purchasing everything with a charge card.

GPO’s Christmas Club accounts makes saving throughout the year easy. Each month or each paycheck, funds can be automatically transferred from your checking account to a special savings account earmarked for the holidays. In October, the balance of the account will be transferred into your savings account - just in time for holiday shopping!

To know how much you will need to set aside each month, first calculate how much you expect to spend on all holiday expenses next year (you can include cards, wrapping and decorations, food and entertaining, and travel, as well as gifts). Divide by the number of months left in the year, and that’s the amount that will be automatically transferred.
