Financial wellness is a lifelong journey
Financial wellness means something different at every stage of life.
For a student, it may mean learning how to build healthy financial habits and understanding the basics of budgeting. For a retiree, it may mean staying informed about the latest fraud tactics and knowing how to better protect personal information and financial accounts.
While financial goals and challenges change over time, one thing remains constant: knowledge can help people make more informed decisions and feel more confident about their financial future.
That is why GPO Federal Credit Union is committed to bringing financial education into the communities we serve through workshops tailored to the unique needs of different audiences.
Building strong foundations with BOCES students
Earlier this year, GPO welcomed students from Oneida-Herkimer-Madison BOCES for a financial wellness workshop designed to complement the lessons they were already exploring in their personal finance classroom.
The presentation covered a variety of foundational topics, including healthy financial habits, budgeting basics, banking fundamentals, and understanding credit scores.
For many students, these concepts represent some of the first steps toward financial independence. Learning how everyday financial decisions can impact future opportunities helps create a stronger understanding of money management before entering adulthood.
Financial literacy is not built in a single lesson, but early exposure to these topics can help students develop skills they will continue to use throughout their lives.

Protecting what matters most
Financial education remains just as important later in life.
In partnership with The Pines at Utica Center for Nursing and Rehabilitation, GPO recently hosted a Banking Safety for Seniors workshop focused on fraud awareness and financial security.
The workshop explored a variety of situations that consumers may encounter, including scam phone calls, phishing attempts, identity theft, and other forms of financial fraud that continue to evolve alongside technology.
While fraud can impact anyone, older adults are often targeted by individuals seeking to exploit trust, urgency, or confusion. Understanding common warning signs and knowing when to pause and verify information can help people better protect themselves and their finances.
Providing these educational opportunities helps empower community members with practical information they can use in everyday life.

Strengthening communities through education
Whether the topic is budgeting, credit, fraud prevention, or financial decision-making, education has the power to create lasting impact.
Every workshop, conversation, and learning opportunity helps equip individuals with knowledge that can support better financial choices and greater confidence.
Through partnerships with local schools, organizations, and community groups, GPO is proud to support financial wellness across the communities we serve and help make financial education more accessible to people of all ages.
