Making Strides Together for Our Community

More Than a Ribbon

Throughout October, pink ribbons serve as a familiar reminder of Breast Cancer Awareness Month. But behind every ribbon is a story. A family supporting a loved one, a friend showing up during treatment, or a neighbor navigating a diagnosis that changes everyday life.

Breast cancer affects more than the person receiving the diagnosis. It can touch entire families, friendships, workplaces, and communities.

At GPO, we believe supporting our neighbors means showing up when it matters. That's why our October Community Commitment is dedicated to raising funds and awareness for the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer.

And we're inviting our members and the greater community to be part of that effort.

Small Acts That Add Up

Making a difference doesn't always require a grand gesture. Sometimes, it starts with a small contribution during an everyday visit to your local GPO branch.

Throughout October, our branches are hosting fundraising activities to give members and community supporters opportunities to get involved.

Supporters can participate through:

  • $2 awareness pins: Wear a symbol of support and help spread awareness.
  • $2 Pink Wall cards: Add your message of encouragement to our branches' Pink Walls.
  • $2.50 chocolate bars: Enjoy a sweet treat while supporting a meaningful cause.

Each purchase contributes to our collective fundraising efforts benefiting the American Cancer Society.

Whether you're stopping in for a quick transaction or visiting specifically to support the cause, every contribution helps us work toward something bigger together.

Walking Together for a Cause

Member Appreciation Month isn't just about giveaways. It's also an opportunity to offer something practical.

Our efforts will continue beyond our branches on Sunday, October 25th, when Team GPO participates in the American Cancer Society's Making Strides Against Breast Cancer Walk at Mohawk Valley Community College in Utica.

Employees will come together to walk alongside our community, support warriors currently fighting breast cancer, celebrate thrivers, and honor the memory of loved ones we've lost.

GPO will also be participating as an “I Love You, Get Screened” booth sponsor, with team members volunteering at the event.

The message behind the booth is simple but important: encouraging the people we care about to prioritize their health and have conversations with their healthcare providers about recommended screenings.

For us, this event is about more than reaching a fundraising goal. It's about being present, showing support, and helping bring attention to a cause that affects so many people in the communities we serve.

Why Community Support Matters

A breast cancer diagnosis can bring challenges that extend beyond medical appointments and treatment decisions.

For some individuals and families, it can also mean time away from work, transportation expenses, changes to household routines, and additional financial responsibilities during an already difficult period.

The American Cancer Society works to support people affected by cancer through research, education, advocacy, and patient support programs.

By coming together through fundraising and community events, we can help support resources and services that make a meaningful difference.

At GPO, our Community Commitment initiatives are rooted in a belief that being part of a community means taking an active role in supporting it.

And when members, employees, and neighbors come together for a shared cause, even small actions can have a lasting impact.

There's Still Time to Make a Difference

Throughout October, we encourage members and community supporters to visit their local GPO branch, participate in our fundraising activities, and help us spread awareness.

You can also show your support for the walkers and volunteers participating in Making Strides on October 25th.

Whether it's purchasing an awareness pin, contributing to a fundraiser, or encouraging someone you care about to prioritize their health, there are many ways to be part of this effort.

Together, we can make strides toward a future where more families have the support, resources, and hope they need.
